Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering Studies for Residential Structures
Presented by David Eastwood, Geotech Engineering and Testing
Organized by AIA Houston
2 HSW
Program Description:
Mr. David Eastwood, P.E. with Geotech Engineering and Testing will be discussing "Environmental
and Geotechical Engineering Studies for Residential Structures". This seminar will discuss site
acquisition due diligence studies, Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Studies, wetlands, faulting,
geotechnical field studies, including site conditions, drilling equipment, sampling methods,
groundwater sampling. He will be discussing laboratory testing, analysis of data, expansive soils,
potential vertical rise, and foundations types including drilled footings, void boxes, helical piles,
auger-cast piles, concrete piles, post-tensioned slab, conventionally reinforced slab, spread footings
and mats.
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will learn about proper soil testing, how deep boring should be.
- Proper laboratory tests that are needed for residential home construction.
- Which foundations to use for the type to use for house construction.
- Effects of trees, drainage, soil for residential construction.
11:00-12:00am
Low Impact Development (LID) – A Primer for Houston Sites
Presented by David Brewer, BrewerEscalante
1 SD
Program Description:
David Brewer will present a primer on low impact development (LID) for sites in Houston, Texas. This presentation will be of special interest to developers, architects, landscape architects and civil engineers practicing in the City of Houston or in the unincorporated parts of Harris County, Texas. Some terms and basic concepts for LID will be discussed and described in a very basic way. The benefits and some of the common objections and concerns about LID will be discussed. A prototypical project will be presented showing the differences between a traditional design and a LID design. The impact of LID on the efficiency, or yield, of the project will be demonstrated. At the end of this seminar participants will NOT be expert in LID but will be better able to communicate with the civil engineer and the developer about LID strategies during the site planning and design process.
Learning Objectives:
- Have a basic understanding of some of the terminology used by civil engineers concerning low impact development (LID).
- Know about some of the benefits of LID.
- Know about some of the objections and concerns about LID.
- Know about some LID strategies that can be employed on projects.

Fiberglass Composites in the Window and Door Industry
Presented by Ron Smith, Marvin Windows and Doors
1 SD/GBCI
Program Description:
This presentation takes an in-depth look at pultruded fiberglass, addressing the material’s characteristics, manufacturing, and performance
Learning Objectives:
- Participant will be able to discuss how composite materials provide predictable, sustainable, and superior performance characteristics over other materials.
- Participants will be able to explain the pultrusion process and it’s reduced environmental impact.
- Participants will be able to identify the specific characteristics of fiberglass, including thermal properties.
- Participants will be able to determine what kind of window frames will be the best for your projects.

Introduction to Managing Daylight with Shading Systems
James Copple by Lutron
1 SD
Learning Objectives:
- Why shade?
- Which daylight factors should be considered?
- What shade styles are available?
- What are the options for shade control?
- How does fabric selection affect daylight control?
2:30pm-3:30pm
Geothermal & Geoexchange in the Greater Houston Area
Russell Buras, LoopTech
1 SD
Program Description:
Geothermal heating and cooling is one of the most efficient systems in saving energy for new and retro installations on buildings. This program discusses what geothermal heating and cooling is, how it works, what types of buildings make for a good application, and case studies examples in the greater Houston area. This market is growing around 30% a year and customers are becoming more educated on it and want it considered when building. Architects need to know what it is and how it may help them win new business.
Learning ObjectivesL
- Explain what a closed loop geothermal system is.
- Evaluate what type of building projects would be a good candidate for these types of systems.
- Compare and contrast some of the pros and cons of a geothermal system with traditional models.
- Compile the basic components of a Geothermal system.
